0008: The Two Mickeys

30-Day Minimalism Challenge, Day Two

Day 2, two items

The first time I went to Disneyland was back in 1991. The person I went with, my adopted mother (more about that later), bought me a Steamboat Willie plush toy to remember the occasion. Years, later, when my adopted mother went to Disneyland without me, she brought me the Sorcerer Mickey plush toy as a souvenir. Since then, I have had these two Mickeys with me. They went to college with me; they came back. They moved across the country when I got my first full-time teaching job, and once I returned to California, they were also with me.

At some point during its lived years, Steamboat Willie became the victim of one of my dogs. The dog used it as something to chew, bite, and trash around. It only happen for a few hours while I was away, but it was enough for poor Steamboat Willie to suffer a little bit of damage, even though you can’t see it in the image above.

At some point I thought of replacing Steamboat Willie with a newer version, but this was the very first Disney toy I owned so I scratched the idea. Now, after 30 years, I am ready to say good-bye to both Steamboat Willie and Sorcerer Mickey. They both served their purpose by bringing me joy, and today I’m ready to pass them on to someone else.

As I say this, I have to admit that I’m very emotional about getting rid of them, but as the song says, “Now is time to say good-bye to all our family. M. I. C. K. E. Y. M. O. U. S. E.”
