00015: Coffee Mugs
Day 6, six items
The first time I saw the musical Les Miserables I was just a young man. I think I had just turned 20. Everyone around me seemed to have seen the musical but me, mainly because I did not have the money for a ticket. At some point, I was able to have the money, buy a ticket, and see the show.
The show was everything I expected it to be and more. It became my favorite musical for a very long time. I memorized all the songs and bought the Broadway Cast Recording, the Original London Cast Recording, and then The Complete Symphonic Recording. Today, Les Miserables continues to be one of my favorite musicals.
Many years later, while on vacation in Mexico City, my best friend and I got tickets to see the Spanish version of the musical. (Un día más-One More Day- Mexico Cast Recording) became very excited to see the musical in my own native language. After the show, I rushed to the theatre’s lobby and bought my souvenir, a Les Miserables coffee mug, or rather, a Los Miserables coffee mug.
Today, I’m partying from both coffee mugs. I bought the English version mug when I first show the show back in the 90s. The Spanish version mug I bought in 2002. I have kept these mugs for a long time, mainly because theatre is my passion. But, as part of my goals to become less cluttered, I’m really working at challenging my emotions by learning to detach myself from material things so as much as I like the mugs, they must go. #carlosmanuelspeaksthetruth
Your comparison to Hamilton today is so on point. I didn’t know it is not cool to admit you love the musical Les Miserables. But, you know what? I don’t care. I love it once and I still love it today. Would I go see it? Not unless there was something totally unprecedented about it. And at this point I don’t know what that would be.
